Eros, Merrill's new K9 officer, has good first day

MERRILL (WAOW) – The first night on the job for the Merrill Police Department's new drug-sniffing dog was productive.

Eros, the department's first K9 officer, assisted the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department in a traffic stop Monday and some marijuana was discovered, Capt. Corey Bennett said Tuesday. “He's got one under his belt.”

Last October, the Bierman Family Foundation of Merrill provided a grant for the department to develop and deploy its first K9 unit.

The amount of the grant has not been disclosed but was very generous, Bennett said.

Eros, a German shepherd, began duties with Officer Matt Drabek on Monday, working the 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. shift, Police Chief Ken Neff said.

The K9 unit will provide another valuable tool to law enforcement to keep the community safe and maintain a quality of life expected by its citizens,” Neff said in a statement.
