UPDATE: Driver seriously hurt during crash with parked semi

RIB MOUNTAIN (WAOW) -- A man was badly injured Wednesday morning when he crashed his car into a parked semi truck, according to Marathon County Sheriff's Department officials.

It happened around 1:00 a.m. at the Rib Mountain Travel Plaza off of Rib Mountain Drive.

According to a lieutenant with the Marathon County Sheriff's Department, deputies were attempting to stop the man for a welfare check when the crash happened.

Investigators say the man was semi-conscious when they removed him from the car. They say he was immediately taken to Aspirus Wausau Hospital with traumatic injuries. The extent of his injuries are unknown at this time. No one else was inside the car at the time.

No one else was hurt, officials say.

Police aren't releasing any further details about what happened, only saying that the crash was not criminal in nature.
