Man charged with sexually assaulting Marathon Co. child

MARATHON COUNTY (WAOW) -- A 38-year-old man was arrested in Washington State after Marathon County Sheriff's Department officials say he sexually assaulted a 12-year-old girl.

Investigators say Praveen Kharb met the girl online, through a messaging system called KIK. They say Kharb used a false name and sent her presents.

He traveled to her home on March 22, according to court documents.

Those records say when investigators talked to the girl, she said “at first when he said he wanted to come visit, she thought they were just going to 'hang out' and talk and visit, but it led to something else.”

Officials say the girl's parents were not home at the time and that Kharb sexually assaulted the girl and then left her house.

They say he left condoms behind, which were found by her parents.

Investigators say Kharb was arrested on May 9 in Bellevue Washington, after the girl's iPad was examined for evidence.

Kharb faces up to 100 years in prison if convicted of the charges.

The Marathon County Assistant District attorney says this can happen to any child, and parents should be aware of the risks of social media.

"They think oh I'm getting the child a music type of device and here they're able to use it like a cell phone,” said Theresa Wetzsteon, the assistant district attorney. "It's important that parent's have that conversation. It doesn't mean your child is having sex, but they're being exposed to these things and that's the reality."

He's still in Washington state and Marathon County Sheriff's Department officials say the extradition process has begun. Authorities plan to bring Kharb back to Marathon County to face charges.
