Saudi king appoints son as Emir of Riyadh

Posted:
The official Saudi Press Agency says King Abdullah has appointed the governor of Riyadh to the post of deputy defense minister, and promoted his son as the new emir of the region.
The report says Prince Salman bin Sultan, who was deputy minister of defense and recently met U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel in Saudi Arabia, was relieved of his post upon his request. The royal decree carried by the agency did not say what position Prince Salman now would take.
The agency reported Riyadh Gov. Khalid bin Bandar was appointed Wednesday in his place as deputy defense minister.
The Saudi king appointed his son Prince Turki as the new Emir of the Riyadh region. King Abdullah also recently appointed another son, Prince Mishaal, as Emir of Mecca.
