UPDATE: Woman who admits to taking dog from humane society speaks out

WAUSAU (WAOW) - WAUSAU (WAOW) -A woman who says she took a dog from the Marathon County Humane Society is speaking out to Newsline 9.

Valerie McCarthy says she went to jail after going to the animal shelter Thursday to pick up the white pit bull named Rosie. She tells us it's her dog.

She says she took the dog from its kennel and drove off, but when shelter workers noticed Rosie was missing, they told us were concerned about the dog's safety.

They put out the alert to find her. So when someone spotted the dog and called the humane society, they told police.

Rosie is fine and back at the humane society.

McCarthy says she should have done things differently.

"I should have handled the situation a little bit better but I was very emotional and when I walked in I did say hi to the girls and I saw my dog and I saw that sign on the cage and I ripped it off and I threw it on the floor and I said come on girl, let's go home," said McCarthy.

McCarthy tells us she now faces a misdemeanor charge. She says she plans to return to the humane society Friday to adopt her dog properly.
