UW-Stevens Point graduation robes go green

STEVENS POINT (WAOW) - UW-Stevens Point is going green for graduation this weekend. Their gowns will actually be made of recycled materials.

Merchandise directors say each gown contains 17 broken down water bottles. They turn the pieces into thread, creating the gowns. The caps are also made of this material.

Directors say it's one more step toward having a more environment friendly campus.

"The UW-SP is a very green campus, and we just thought what a better way to have the green initiative go through with all of our graduates in recycled gowns, and we're helping out the environment one graduate at a time," said Erin Raikowski, the merchandise buyer for the campus.

The university has been using the gowns since 2010. They say all of the gowns are recycled, and they will continue to use them for future ceremonies.
