COPY-Seniors prepare for real world at UW-Stevens Point

The college journey is almost over for some seniors at UW-Stevens Point.

"I'm very excited to graduate," said Pranav Dogra of India.

But along with that diploma comes new responsibilities. So what's next for seniors heading into the real world?

"I will be a CFY, speech language pathologist,” said Jim McMahon of Michigan. “So that's a clinical fellowship year."

"IT, so it was very clear I had to go into the consulting area,"said Dogra.

University leaders say this graduating class has a 92 percent placement rate, which is an increase from previous years.

"I’ve seen a lot of activity by employers and lots of positions being posted,” said Lorry Thomasgard Walters, the associate director of career services at UW-SP. “Not at any particular point in time, I mean recently we had over 900 jobs active in our system."

But the road into the workforce wasn't always easy.

"Just trying to sift through all the listings was probably the most challenging, and just really looking for what you want," said McMahon.

That's why they say persistence is key.

"Don't get unmotivated if a couple of companies say no to you, because you never know,” said Dogra. “The best job is probably waiting for you."

For some students, the job search continues.

"It's a lot of applying, it's a lot of resumes,” said Molly Cobb of Madison. “Cover letters, calling up and following up."

These students are preparing for their next step, whatever that may be.

UW-Stevens Point's commencement is Saturday. Campus leaders say more than 1,400 seniors are set to get their diploma.
