Rebates available to replace wood-burning heaters

WAUSAU (WAOW) - About 200 Wisconsin homeowners have applied for a rebate to replace wood burning appliances with newer models that are more energy efficient.

"The most important thing for us is that it reduces air pollution. The Environmental Protection Agency tells us just taking one of these out of circulation is like taking five diesel buses off the road," said Dona Wininsky of the American Lung Association.

The Lung Association oversees applications for the program.

The rebates, ranging from $1,000 to $10,000, come from a multi-million dollar settlement Wisconsin Public Service reached with the EPA for alleged environmental violations for failing to get proper permits at the Weston Power Plant, the utility said Friday.

On Friday, WPS, the Lung Association and a stove retailer showed off one of the new wood stoves being installed at a rural Stevens Point home.
