UPDATE: Victim identified in Adams County lake death

ROME (WAOW) - A Texas man died Monday when he attempted to swim to a pontoon boat that had floated away while he tried to launch it on Lake Camelot, Adams County Medical Examiner Marilyn Rogers said.

The incident happened about 10 a.m. at a boat landing, she said.

Gregory Koceja, 55, of Waxahachie, Texas died, according to Rome Police Chief Jason Lauby.

An autopsy performed Monday in Madison determined Koceja died of some sort of "medical event," most likely heart-related, after he went into the water, Rogers said.

The man jumped into the water without a life jacket and tried to swim to the boat, she said.

"It sounds like he went unresponsive almost immediately," the medical examiner said.

The man was in the water a "very short time" before he floated about 140 yards to a shoreline, where efforts to resuscitate him failed, Rogers said.

"He could have had a fatal heart attack before he drowned," she said.

The man owned a seasonal residence on the lake and was getting it ready for summer when a rope holding the pontoon boat came loose, she said
