Aspirus branch YMCA tills new garden

WAOW - WAUSAU (WAOW)--Workers at the Aspirus YMCA in Weston hope they have a green thumb when it comes to gardening. If they do, food pantries will benefit.

The Y has tilled some nearby ground for a one-half acre garden.

"There are so many thanks that go out for this. The landowner next door provided the garden plot and Thrivent Financial provided start-up costs for some of the equipment," said Aspirus Branch Manger David Phelps.

Workers intend to create raised beds and an irrigation system is planned.

Phelps says Ace Hardware in Weston and Charlie's Hardware of Mosinee will donate plants for the garden.

If the weather cooperates, planting should begin in early June.

Phelps says the vegetables that are grown in the plot will be donated to area food pantries.
