Wausau West hires Brian Brandt to lead hockey program

WAUSAU (WAOW) - Brian (BJ) Brandt Jr. has been named the new coach of the Wausau West hockey program. The Warriors athletic program announced the hiring Tuesday afternoon.

Brandt will replace Pete Susens, who retired after 36 seasons with the team.

Brandt was a three-sport athlete at Wausau West from 1996 to 1999, playing football, hockey, and baseball. After high school, he played Division I college football and club hockey at Central Michigan University. In 2004, Brandt took part in the NFL kicker and punter combine.

Brandt has been the head JV coach and assistant varsity coach in the Warriors hockey program since 2006. He's also coached freshman softball, JV 2 golf, and was an assistant on the varsity football team for six seasons (2006-11). In addition to his coaching experience at Wausau West, Brandt has taught math and techonology in the Wausau School Distict since 2006.

The Wausau West hockey program has made state tournament appearances for the past five straight seasons, winning the state championship in 2011, and finishing 2nd in 2010 and 2012.
