Outdoors with Lauren: Turkey Hunting

Posted:
Turkey hunting is one of my two favorite things to do.  After a very cold start to this year's season, my patience paid off.
Avid outdoorsman Tom Keenan has developed a great relationship with the landowner of this beautiful field, and offered to take me hunting on it.
"I get up at 3:30 in the morning many mornings in a row. You hunt till noon and go to work, get home at 10:00 get up do it again. There's something about the birds or hearing that gobble in the morning."
Keenan and I climbed into the blind just before 5 A.M., using an approach I'm unfamiliar with.  No decoys, and minimal calling.
"If you watch the toms they didn't really go with the hens. They're kind of by themselves and sometimes you just have to sit and wait them out."
That's exactly what happened. Multiple hens surrounded our blind snacking on clover.  My excitement grew, my heart pounded as my tom strutted closer.
"I hardly called them. The two hens hens came out and eventually he kind of slid into us and you put the smack down on him.  I'm very happy for you. You're a great hunter, and very patient."
