Rural Health Initiative makes its way to Marathon Co.

Marathon County (WAOW) -- A program to help bring medical care to farmers is now in Marathon County.

It's called the Rural Health Initiative, a non-profit program that gives farmers the chance to get at home preventative screenings.

On Wednesday, members of the farming community came together to get things started at the kick-off celebration in Stratford.

At the center of the program was Marathon County's new rural health professional. Her job is to make complimentary house calls to interested farm families in the county. The program provides health screening, information and education.

"Why do we expect them to come in when everything else comes to them. They're out there busy, they're working long hours, putting in long days and a lot of hours. They're a little disconnected from the more urban communities," explained Rural Health Initiative Executive Director Rhonda Strebel.

The program began in Shawano County in 2003. It's currently in Waupaca and Outagamie counties as well.

Leaders say the program will benefit all types of farmers, from those on dairy farms to hobby farms. They say one day they hope to offer these services state wide.
