UPDATE Driver using cell phone before crash

WAUSAU (WAOW) - A 30-year-old Wausau driver told investigators he was holding a cell phone and talking on speaker, he looked down and then he was unable to stop before rear-ending a car that was pushed into a third vehicle on Grand Avenue in Wausau, police said Friday.

The driver was cited for using a mobile device while driving, making him the fourth to receive that citation since Wausau passed its ban on using cell phones while driving in February, Capt. Ben Bliven said.

All have involved crashes, he said. Officers have issued another 160 warning citations for the violation.

"Obviously, a lot of people are still using their mobile devices," he said. "We have definitely asked out patrol officers to do enforcement as much as we can to do more education."

The Grand Avenue crash happened about 6 p.m. Thursday. No one was seriously hurt, authorities said.
