3 area police departments target drunken drivers

WAUSAU (WAOW)--Three Wausau area police departments are joining forces for a new program aimed at getting drunken drivers off area roads.

Wausau, Rothschild and Kronenwetter police launch what they are calling "high visibility OWI patrols" on Friday night in Wausau.

Five officers from each department will work together in teams in assigned areas to identify and arrest impaired drivers.

"We will hold 14 of these joint ventures. It is the first time we have all worked together. It gives us more manpower so we can have more of a focused impact," Capt. Ben Bliven of the Wausau Police Department said.

Officers will post bright pink signs on roads targeted for enforcement.

The summer-long project will also involve OWI patrols in Kronenwetter and Rothschild.

Bliven says a grant from the state provides money to pay the officers' overtime.
