Wood County veterans memorial honors soldiers

Community members came together for the Wood County veterans memorial dedication ceremony Friday.

414 flags were placed by students in the area to honor those who have passed away to war in Wood County.

"It's a good learning experience for them so that they too understand that the blessings that this country has are not free." said Jim Reigel, past commander of the Wisconsin American Legion.

For one Wood County family, this ceremony hit close to home.

Ron Huser was a medical corpsman in Vietnam. He died on April 25, 2006 from long-term effects of chemicals used in the war. Friday, his name was added to the memorial.

Huser was one of 13 children and many of them attended the ceremony to show their support.

"He endured a lot of things during his lifetime and he never complained," said Huser's sister, Elaine Seefeldt

The family gathered after to take pictures and share their favorite memories of Huser.

They say he would be happy to see this moment and felt good that his name was finally added to the monument.

"I just hope he's looking down and sharing this with us, we're very proud of him," said Seefeldt
