WAUSAU (WAOW) -
Wisconsin Woodchucks fans enjoy new park
The day Wisconsin Woodchucks fans have been waiting for is finally here. Newly renovated Athletic Park in Wausau has opened its doors for the home opener.
"We usually go to like five games each summer and I’m really excited to do that," said Connor Grimm of Wausau.
The team's owner says the park has a number of new additions fans will enjoy.
"Our concourse before was 6 feet wide,” said Mark Macdonald, the Woodchucks owner. “So when people passed they had to turn to get by each other, now it's 17 feet wide."
The park's pro shop also got a makeover.
"We used to work out of a box but now it's 700 square feet," said Macdonald.
Another new feature of the park are four top tables that put fans only 35 feet away from home plate.
"It's $100 all you can eat and drink which is quite a bargain actually,” said Macdonald. “We're finding those are selling pretty quickly and I think the first two weeks of the season are already sold out."
Fans are also getting a seat upgrade.
"We have a lot more comfortable seating,” said Macdonald. “Fans will find it much more pleasant to come to the games."
For some fans, that's what they're excited about.
"Then there's new seats that we can sit on and that everybody can sit," said Grimm.
The Woodchuck's owner says it was a long process to get everything ready, but he says the finished ballpark is something the entire community can be proud of.
The Woodchucks home opener is against the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters.
