WAUSAU (WAOW) -
The Wausau YMCA is testing its green thumb as planting began in a new community garden Tuesday.
All the vegetables in the garden go to local food pantries. Leaders at the YMCA Aspirus branch have been prepping soil for weeks. Now, they are planting tomatoes, peppers, onions, beans, peas, and carrots.
"The vegetables are going to be anywhere from 45 to 70 days to mature. So, I would look for first crop to be around middle to end of July and we'll be planting so we have continuous harvest through the fall," YMCA Aspirus branch manager David Phelps.
Thrivent Financial gave the YMCA the initial start up to build the garden.
