Ceremony at State Capitol for D-Day anniversary

MADISON (WAOW) – The Department of Veterans Affairs plans to commemorate the 70th anniversary of D-Day on Friday during a special ceremony at the Capitol.

The program is meant to honor and recognize the sacrifices of Wisconsin veterans on that day and from others, according to a release from the state.

“D-Day marks an important day in our nation's history and I couldn't be more honored to spend it with these veterans,” said WDVA Secretary John Scocos.

During the ceremony, five Wisconsin World War II veterans will be honored, including two from Beloit, one from Broadhead and two from Madison. Among them, 1st Sgt. Ray Nelson, who rode a glider into enemy territory in Normandy and fought in harsh conditions. He received a Silver Star for his actions in World War II.

On June 6, 1944, 160,000 allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of French coastline to fight Germany on the beaches of Normandy. The largest seaborne invasion in history, the operation began the invasion of German-occupied Western Europe and led to an Allied victory in World War II.

The ceremony is set to begin Friday at 12 p.m. in the State Capitol Rotunda.

The event is free and open to the public.

Newsline 9 plans to live stream the ceremony. You can watch that by clicking here.
