There is a pile of diapers stacking up in Portage County, all to help needy families. It's called the United Way's "No Child Wet Behind," and donations continue through Father's Day. From Plover to Stevens Point, there are three locations where you can drop off diapers.
"This is our second year of the "Child's No Wet Behind Drive,"" said Patti Cahill, United Way director of community impact. "We kicked off May 9th with two events."
Last year the United Way fulfilled nearly 2,000 requests for diapers. Local service clubs, churches, and schools have already collected thousands of diapers for this year's drive.
"Diapers are distributed to income eligible families throughout portage county," said Cahill. "Our primary source of distibution is Operation Bootstrap, but we also have emergency and weekend distribution through other partners, and folks that need help distributing diapers can go through emergency services."
A pack of diapers can cost up to nearly 50 dollars. Add baby wipes and other diaper care products to that, and it quickly becomes expensive for parents. For example, a parent working a full-time, minimum wage job, will spend ten percent of the salary on diapers.
"Diapers have always been one of those top needs," said Cahill. "They're expensive, they really are a basic need for families with young children. The data that we have supports that it could cost as much as $1,104.00 per year to support a family with diapers and wipes. that's a lot for a struggling family."
United way is accepting donations of both diapers and money.
"You can donate at our United Way office, at 1100 Centerpoint Drive," said Cahill. "And we also have two churches that are accepting community donations, Good Shepard Lutheran Church in Plover and Trinity Lutheran Church in Stevens Point. People that need diapers should contact emergency services for referrals."
