Pools in Marathon County get ready to open for summer

MARATHON COUNTY (WAOW) - With the warmer weather, pools are getting ready to open for the season.

"People are ready to come swim," said Karyn Powers, the recreation superintendent for Marathon County.

Workers began filling pools in Marathon County like Schulenburg Pool in Wausau.

"They're working on the filter systems, the mechanics, the water quality and prepping the grounds," said Powers.

The county parks superintendent says the tough winter gave workers some extra preparing to do this year.

"This winter seriously tested all of our equipment, tested the age of our buildings and we've done a lot of maintenance work to get them ready to go," said Powers.

But some made it through the winter unscathed.

"Everything was taken care of,” said Jeremy Brandt, the Weston Aquatic Center manager. “So the winter didn't affect much."

The Aquatic Center in Rothschild is almost ready to go.

"We've been working for the last few weeks doing a lot of cleaning,” said Brandt. “The pool was filled last week and we've been heating it every day."

The superintendent says more than 30,000 people came to the pools last year. After this winter, she says that number is sure to go up.

"They have sat inside, or stood behind their snow blower, or pushed a shovel or shook their fist at the wind," said Powers.

So workers know people are ready to finally trade in those coats and snow boots for a bathing suit and flip flops.

The Aquatic Center in Rothschild opens June 7. Schulenburg Pool will start its season on June 13.
