TAYLOR COUNTY (WAOW) – A 28-year-old man accused of shooting a Taylor County Sheriff's Department deputy is set to appear in court for a plea hearing on Monday.

Alexander Schneider is charged with attempted first-degree homicide and five other felonies in the Sept. 8 shooting of Deputy Chad Kowalczyk, who was hit once in the abdomen.

Kowalczyk has since returned to work.

The Taylor County district attorney told Newsline 9 prosecutors have “anticipated that we have reached an agreement.” That agreement means Schneider would avoid a trial, which was set to begin July 21.

The shooting occurred after Kowalczyk had gone to Schneider's home to investigate a woman's complaint that Schneider had sent her at least 16 text messages that day, in violation of a restraining order, according to the criminal complaint.

Prosecutors say Schneider shot the deputy through the front door of Schneider's home with a .22-caliber rifle and shot at him at least three more times as the deputy fled.

Schneider has been jailed on $1 million cash bond since his arrest.

Schneider's attorney did not immediately return a call for comment.
