Two brothers walk for awareness with swagger

MICHIGAN (WAOW) -- Two brothers from Michigan are on an inspiring journey. They are united in an effort to raise awareness about cerebral palsy.

It's the journey of a lifetime for brothers Hunter and Braden Gandee.

"Thank you guys for coming out and for your support. It mean's so much to us,” said Braden Grandee during a celebration for his family.

The seven-year-old was born with cerebral palsy which affects his motor ability. His big brother, Hunter, is raising awareness about his CP in a unique way, they call it Cerebral Palsy Swagger Walk.

They are setting out on a 40 mile trek, from the wrestling room at Bedford Junior High to the University of Michigan's wrestling center. Hunter is taking every step with his 54 pound brother strapped to his back.

“I'm really proud of him this is just amazing that he has actually stepped up to do something like this," said Kerragan Gandee, Hunter and Braden's sister.

“He is very determined. If Hunter says he is going to do something, he does it and there is never a doubt that he won't because that's just part of who he is," said Danielle Grandee, the boys mother.

“It's been great we have had so many people with us and behind us and along the way," said Hunter.

Hunter's efforts to bring awareness to CP has grabbed national and international attention.

“Honestly, when I thought of the idea I thought it would be just me and Braden. Obviously, as you can see, it's not that,” said Hunter.

A long line of friends and supporters followed behind and lined the roads.

“We are a little hot and a little tired,” said Hunter during the walk.

But when Hunter gets tired, he says finding motivation is easy.

“All the people that came to support us, and all the help that they have given us, and also all the kids out there with CP who are having trouble with everyday of their life," said Hunter.

“We knew from the beginning once he said he was doing it, he was doing it. And I know he will cross the line tomorrow with Braden on his back,” added Danielle.

And for those with CP Hunter can't carry on his back, he carries in his heart.
