Wausau schools wrap up Wednesday

WAUSAU (WAOW) -- After being stuck indoors all these months, Lincoln Elementary students are excited to finally say, "School's out."

Students raced to the finish line in their annual Log Jog, but their adrenaline rush is from getting to be outside. Teachers and staff are happy to create outdoor activities for the students after the cold winter months.

"It was a long winter," said principal Julie Schell. "The kids were inside, they did a great job. We did some indoor recesses in the gym, where we got them moving and doing some aerobics, walking, and running on some of those stretches of long days."

The students have not forgotten the hardships of living through such brutal winter. Wausau schools had three snow days this year, which is why they are getting out later than other surrounding schools.

"We couldn't move around, and we couldn't be active," said first grader Milo Holdhusen. "I'm kind of sad because my sister got out on Friday, and it was kind of sad because she has gotten to do a lot of fun stuff while I've still been at school. But I'm still kind of excited about it because I still get to have fun with my friends at school and play with them."

The students are already realizing the benefits of the warm weather and disadvantages of winter.

"Well, we have to get all kinds of stuff on when it's all cold," said first grader Tanner Ladwig. "Sometimes we just have to stay inside."

And they are starting to take advantage of the summer season. Other first graders said they love climbing on the monkey bars and being outside during the warm weather. As the year comes to a close, these students will certainly have plenty of time to enjoy the summer weather.
