Marshfield railroad intersection has reopened

MARSHFIELD (WAOW)- The Maple Avenue railroad intersection in Marshfield has reopened Wednesday after a three-week experiment.

The city closed the intersection for a study after three cars crashed into trains this winter.

The closure was to find out how drivers would get around the intersection if it were to close permanently for safety reasons.

Officials say the closure did its job.

"It's increased awareness of railroad crossings safety a lot of people are talking about it, whether they agree with the closure or not. Lots of people are talking about railroad crossings and I think there is an increased awareness of trying to be safe at these crossings, " said Dan Knoeck, Marshfield Director of Public Works.

City officials say it's clear from the study that people want the intersection to remain open.

The next step in its future involves a hearing with the State Railroad Commissioner.
