Portage County man guilty in toddler's death

STEVENS POINT (WAOW) – A man babysitting his girlfriend's two-year-old son was found guilty Friday of recklessly causing the child's death nearly three years ago.

A jury convicted Reymundo Perez of first-degree reckless homicide and child abuse causing great harm following about six hours of deliberations, a court official said. The trial started June 3.

Perez was accused of shaking the child, Felix Villa-Martinez, and slamming him on the ground in October 2011.

A criminal complaint said Perez was babysitting the child while his mother was at work. It says he called 911 when he couldn't wake the unconscious child. The boy died two days later at a Marshfield hospital.

No sentencing date was immediately set.
