Assumption falls in back and forth state semifinal against Oakfield

In a game that featured four lead changes over the course of six innings, the Assumption softball team was unable to respond after its opponent, Oakfield, scored three runs in the sixth, and the Royals fell 6-4 in the WIAA Division 4 State Semifinals.

"It was an honor to get down here, it just really hurts right now," Assumption senior Brittney Birkhauser said. "We've accomplished a lot as a team, but we just fell short today."

The Royals went back and forth throughout their matchup with Oakfield, which has won three of the last five WIAA Division 4 softball championships.

"We kept getting exciting but then they would hit and they would get the holes," freshman Kara Milkey said. "In the bottom of the sixth, we got our heads down and we couldn't catch back up.

This was the Royals fourth trip to the state tournament, and first since 2006, and their head coach, Mandy Turba, told Newsline 9 she knows bigger achievements are on the horizon.

"It's a great experience," Turba said. "These girls are all just super girls and they worked so hard to get to this point, so you can't ask for anything more from them."

Mosinee is the only area team remaining at the WIAA State Tournament. It plays New London tomorrow at 3:05 p.m. for the Division 2 championship. Newsline 9 will have coverage on Newsline 9 at 6 and 10, and here on
