Merrill company fined $60,000 for air pollution

MADISON (WAOW) – A Merrill metal fabrication company has been ordered to pay $60,000 for violating its state air pollution control permit, Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen said Tuesday.

Merrill Fab Inc. allowed excessive hazardous air pollution at its plant from October 2009 through July 2010, according to a judgment issued in Lincoln County Circuit Court.

Merrill Fab self-reported the exceedances and thereafter took steps to bring its emissions into compliance with the permit,” Van Hollen said in a statement. "The facility has been in compliance since August 2010."

The hazardous pollutants released included toluene and xylene, the attorney general said.

Merrill Fab is classified as a major source under state air pollution law because it has potential to emit at least 25 tons of any combination of hazardous air pollutants, which are a threat to human health and the environment, Van Hollen said.
