Kitten killer sentenced to four months in jail

WISCONSIN RAPIDS (WAOW) - A 26-year-old Nekoosa man was ordered to spend four months in jail as part of a three-year probation for killing his sister's cat after he became upset because she wasn't home last fall.

Brian Sentkowski was sentenced Tuesday for felony mistreatment of animals causing death. It follows a plea deal in which prosecutors dismissed one misdemeanor count of criminal trespassing.

According to the criminal complaint, Sentkowski went to his sister's house in the town of Saratoga on Nov. 27 and became upset because no one was home and because he was drinking.

He took out his frustration on an orange and white kitten, killing it with a knife and tossing it into a ditch across the street from the home, the complaint said.

Wood County Judge Todd Wolf sentenced Sentkowski to 18 months in prison and two years of extended supervision but he stayed that sentence and ordered the three-year probation, including terms requiring Sentkowski pay a $654 fine, maintain "absolute sobriety" and own no pets unless approved by a probation agent, a clerk of court said.

If Sentkowski, who was charged as a repeat offender, violates the probation, the sentence that was stayed kicks in, the clerk said.
