30 apply to become new Stevens Point fire chief

STEVENS POINT (WAOW) - Thirty people have applied to become Stevens Point's new fire chief to replace the leader who took over the Wausau Fire Department, authorities said Wednesday.

It is unknown how many of the applicants now work for the Stevens Point department.

"We have not gone through the applications yet," said Dave Schleihs, president of the Police and Fire Commission.

Former Fire Chief Tracey Kujawa moved to the Wausau Fire Department in early May, and Stevens Point Assistant Fire Chief Bob Finn was named interim chief.

Schleihs said Finn has "indicated to me he has or will be applying."

The new fire chief will earn between $85,600 and $110,100, according to a listing for the opening on the city's web site.

One of the qualifications is applicants must have at least seven years of experience as a fire chief, assistant fire chief or senior staff person.

The city will accept applications until the end of June and begin screening them July 2, Schleihs said.

No goal has been set for naming a new chief, Schleihs said.

About four years ago, the search for Kujawa took 18 months, he said.
