Family, friends mourn loss of loved one in Marathon Co. crash
WAUSAU (WAOW) -
The family and friends of a man who died after his car crashed in the Eau Claire River are mourning his loss.
Although police have not released the man's name, family and friends tell Newsline 9 that 27-year-old Matt Chaignot of Rothschild died in that crash.
Wednesday night, family and friends held a memorial for Chaignot where his car was found.
They say they wanted to honor his memory.
"Everybody is so hurt by the tragic accident that happened here," said Stacey Kyle, Chaignot's fiance.
Chaignot's body was pulled from his SUV in the water of the Eau Clair River. The gold Lincoln Navigator was found underwater by the Eau Claire River Dam Tuesday morning.
Everest Metro Police are still investigating how this happened, but they tell us there was no foul play involved.
"It hurt so bad," said Kyle. "I wish I could take the day back."
To family and friends, Chaignot was a dear friend and father to two little girls.
"He was such a loving guy," said Kyle. "He loved his children so much. They meant the world to him. They were his everything."
"He was 'Pretty Boy,' that's why we decorated his cross with so many jewels, always had his buckled jeans and spiked hair," said Kirsten Chaignot, Chaignot's cousin. "He took longer in the morning to get ready than I did."
During the memorial, family and friends put up a cross, held hands in prayer and threw flowers into the waters where his car was found.
"We wanted to show how much he meant to us," said Chaignot.
The family is still waiting for answers about what really happened.
