Police: Wausau SUV driver died from drowning

SCHOFIELD (WAOW) – The 27-year-old Wausau man found dead inside a sports utility vehicle that plunged into the Eau Claire River died from drowning, Everest Metro Police said Thursday.

The finding is based on a preliminary autopsy on Matthew Chaignot done Wednesday in Madison, Capt. Clayton Schulz said.

“We are still waiting for toxicology reports which may help to determine a further cause of the crash,” he said in a statement. “Those results will not be available for several weeks.”

The crash happened sometime early Tuesday near a dam in Schofield. The SUV was submerged in the river and was not found until a bicyclist noticed tracks in a grassy area leading into the river about 8:30 a.m., investigated closer and saw the vehicle through the murky water.
