Assumption outlasts Lake Country Lutheran to advance to D-4 championship

The Assumption girls soccer team wasn't able to manage much of an offensive attack in its WIAA Division 4 semifinal Thursday afternoon, but it didn't matter.

Goalkeeper Gena Grundhoffer and the Royals defense was brilliant, surviving 25 shots on goal from the Lightning. Grundhoffer had 13 saves, and stopped all five shots in the shootout, as Assumption prevailed with a 1-0 win.

"I'm just so glad I got it," Grundhoffer said, elated. "Those are so hard to save, but we practice and practice and it's so hard to get one one handed, and I got it and we won. It was great."

Royals senior Sadie Zurfluh, who score the game winning goal in the shootout, also played a key role as a member of the Assumption defense.

"We just told ourselves 'come on, we have to hold them off and win a shootout,'" Zurfluh said. "And that's exactly what happened and it was great."

This is Grundhoffer's first year between the posts for the Royals, and her teammates testify that she is vastly improved from the beginning of the season, culminating with the performance of her career in Thursday's semifinal.

"This is Gena's first year," Assumption senior Mary Sigler said. "She was a little inexperienced at first, but now the whole season is behind her, and as you can see she played terrific."

Assumption plays New Holstein Saturday for the Division 4 championship.
