UWSP high school arts camp

STEVENS POINT (WAOW)- More than 100 high school students from around the state are at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point this week for the annual arts camp.

More than 60 years ago, the university started a summer music camp.

It has grown and it now includes workshops, classes and activities for students interested in several areas of the arts.

"It's something that all of us here look forward to every year," said Music Director Mathew Buchman. "We just love having the students."

This year the camp organized sections in art, music and video production, including screenwriting.

Campers get a taste of university life by going to classes throughout the day, eating at the dining hall and sleeping in the dorm rooms at night.

One art camper knows the campus well.

Sammy Paradiso liked her experience so much last year that she decided to come back.

"The amount that I learned last year, blew my mind," said Paradiso.

Campers studying in the art program get plenty of variety.

They will do things like metal casting and making sculptures from old furniture and electronics.

"It's just a really fun experience. It's gotten me to open my mind even more. It's given me a lot of ideas," said Paradiso.

The faculty who run the camp say many students go home with more confidence in their abilities.

"Campers frequently say I never thought I would be able to do this," said Buchman.

The faculty say students also grow as individuals as well as an artists while at the camp.
