Man wanted for speeding flees, crashes and dies

RHINELANDER (WAOW) – A 27-year-old driver trying to elude police who suspected him of speeding was killed when his vehicle crashed into a ditch during the chase, the Rhinelander Police Department said Tuesday.

The crash happened Monday night at the intersection of Highway K and Forest Loop Road in the Town of Newbold just west of Rhinelander, Police Chief Michael Steffes said.

Sean O'Corrain of Rhinelander died at the scene of the crash, Oneida County Sheriff Grady Hartman said.

According to Steffes, an officer attempted to stop the man's vehicle for speeding about 8:30 p.m. in Rhinelander and the driver sped away, ignoring emergency lights and siren before leaving the roadway and crashing in the ditch.

The driver died at the scene, the police chief said in a statement.
