DOT: Expect more delays on Wausau's Grand Ave.

WAUSAU (WAOW) – The $2.9 million project to repave one of Wausau's busiest streets reaches a new phase this week that will likely cause motorists more delays, the state Department of Transportation said Tuesday.

Crews will begin milling pavement on Grand Avenue, also known as Business 51, between Kent Street and Townline Road on Thursday, clearing the way for paving to begin next week, DOT spokesman Kristin McHugh said.

This stage of construction involves a significant increase in construction traffic entering and exiting the project limits,” she said. “Motorists will likely encounter longer delays and are encouraged to allow more time for travel or find an alternate route.”
Thousands of vehicles use the north-south route through the city each day.
By mid-July, workers will begin rebuilding the portion of Grand Avenue between Townline Road and Division Street, with a goal of finishing all work by early October, McHugh said.

The federal government is providing 80 percent of the money for the project, with the rest coming from a combination of state and local sources, she said.
