Stevens Point company to hire 150 employees in upcoming months

STEVENS POINT (WAOW) -- A Stevens Point company opened its doors Tuesday to potential new hires.

Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection is a growing company with dozens of new jobs to fill.

Company leaders say about 60 people came to the open house for tours and interviews.

They say they're looking to hire 150 employees. They declined to say what salaries might be offered for the jobs.

The company says people in central Wisconsin have the work ethic it is looking for.

Tim Drinka of Marshfield says his job search has been hard, so he wasn't going to miss the open house.

"With the amount of open positions that they were offering, I was like, 'Okay, now here's a chance,'" he said.

He showed up with a goal in mind.

"I'm looking more toward something that's going to be permanent, full-time and without possible layoffs," Drinka said.

BHTP is looking to fill sales and customer service jobs with people like Drinka.

"We're hiring from call center people to full-on salary positions," said Brad Rutta, the company's director of marketing.

He says they want "bright applicants that we can take and mold into other positions and really kind of grow this out."

Formerly the Noel Group, the company has grown rapidly since being purchased by Nebraska billionaire Warren Buffett in January.

Since then, company leaders say they've added about 65 employees.

"We're busting at the seams at the space that we have," said Rutta. "Our expansion includes another building."

Leaders say even with a possible expansion, they'll be staying in Stevens Point.

"We want to keep these jobs in this community and we want to give everyone an opportunity to grow in Stevens Point," Rutta said.

That stability appealed to those at the open house.

"I'm working toward getting full-time and I see that that's offered here so it seemed like a pretty good opportunity to take up," said Josh Akright of Plover.

BHTP offers consulting services and insurance for travelers.

Company leaders say they will host another open house Thursday from 3-7.

They expect to be filling openings for several months.
