Students lend helping hand at area food pantry

WAUSAU (WAOW) -- Youth group students from around the state got their hands dirty for a good cause.

Dozens of students from different area churches are all part of Mount Olive Youth Group. This week, they're spending time at the Neighbor's Place in Wausau. It's all part of a program called, "A Week of Service."

For the past four days, students have helped sort food, paint walls, and build beds for families in need. Organizers say mattresses were donated from Fort McCoy but they didn't have any bed frames to put them in. So, these students have spent the last two days building and painting bed frames that will be donated to area families.

"Once we explain to them where these beds are going or how we're helping people in the community by fixing these rolling cabinets, making it easier for people in need to come in and shop, to rebuild their house, they get that feeling and they know they're doing something," said Dave Johnson, site foreman.

Students finish up in Wausau Friday. Then, in a couple weeks, it's off to Colorado.

Students say they're excited to travel to different communities and lend a helping hand.

Furniture and Appliance Mart donated a semi truck full of furniture to the Neighbor's Place. Students helped unload and sort all of the items. Organizers say it's help like this that really means a lot.
