UPDATE Flooding temporarily closes HW 97

ATHENS (WAOW) – The Marathon County Highway Department says heavy downpours Friday morning forced the temporary closure of at least one section of state Highway 97.

“The problem is water running over the road or the potential of washouts,” said Jeff Hahn, an official with the agency in Wausau.

Highway 97 was monitored for potential flooding of creeks and other problems from just north of state Highway 29 to about four miles north of Athens, Hahn said.

The state Department of Transportation said Highway 97 was blocked at county Highway A north of Athens and traffic was detoured for a time as water a foot deep poured across the road. The barricades were removed about 11 a.m. with no damage to the road, authorities said.

The area where the flooding occurred received .75 of an inch of rain within 40 minutes Friday morning, Newsline 9 forecaster Caleb Cox said.
It fell so hard that poor visibility cut traffic speeds to 30 mph, Hahn said.
