The world of electric cars is growing in Wausau

WAUSAU (WAOW) -- The world of electric cars is growing. Now, Wausau is taking steps to get on the map.

Ghidorzi Companies has installed the first Tesla electric car charging station in central Wisconsin. It's located at the Marriott Courtyard in Wausau.

Mark Asplund of Wausau is one of the very few people in this area that owns a Tesla. He says he bought it a little more than a year ago. The car is completely electric. Asplund says he can travel about 250 miles with a fully charged battery. But after that, he needs to charge up.

"You have to make sure you have a chance to charge it, you do not want to run out of gas because it's not simple to just bring in a battery and go, you can't do that, it won't work," explained Asplund.

There aren't many Tesla charging stations in Wisconsin. Right now, there's one in Madison and another in Racine. Asplund says it isn't exactly practical to drive long distances in the Midwest. But, he says he hopes in a few years more and more cities will develop the technology.

The car goes for about $90,000 dollars. But, charging it is free!
