RIB MOUNTAIN (WAOW) - A 49-year-old Stevens Point man was swimming in a private pond during a typical family gathering on a hot day when he apparently drowned, the Marathon County Sheriff's Department said Monday.

Vang Yang died Saturday, the agency said. According to the Marathon County Medical Examiner's office, an autopsy found that Yang's death was consistent with drowning.

Nearly 30 people were enjoying the day at the private pond with a beach when Yang disappeared in the water Saturday afternoon, investigators said.

There was no evidence of alcohol and drinking at the scene, the sheriff's department said.

The body of a 49-year old man was pulled from the bottom of a pond after he went missing while swimming, according to a Marathon County Sheriff's Department Lieutenant.

Lt. Ryan Weber of the Marathon County Sheriff's Department says the man went missing around 3:30 p.m. Saturday on private property on Goldenrod Road in Rib Mountain.

He says family members lost sight of the man in the water and called 911. Authorities say the pond is about 15 feet deep and less than two acres wide.

The Marathon County Dive Team recovered the deceased man's body just before 6 p.m. Saturday evening.

"He is deceased," said Lt. Ryan Weber of the Marathon County Sheriff's Department. "There will be an autopsy [Sunday], presumably drowning, but we're not positive on that yet."

Family members of the man say he was from Stevens Point and visiting family at the time.

The incident is under investigation.
