US attorney says Miron Construction has monitor

Posted:
MILWAUKEE (WAOW) – The business affairs of one of Wisconsin's largest construction companies that has done extensive business in central Wisconsin will be monitored by an accountant, U.S. Attorney James Santelle said Monday.

The naming of Stephen VanderBloemen to oversee Neenah-based Miron Construction Co., which has 1,200 workers and an office in Wausau, is part of a deal to settle a federal investigation into how the company billed five Wisconsin school districts for labor costs.

The projects took place in the De Pere, D.C. Everest, Marathon, Abbotsford, and Waunakee school districts between 2003 and 2008.

The deal, announced in April as a non-prosecution agreement, called for Miron to pay $4 million besides being monitored by an outside accountant.

“Mr. VanderBloemen's work as the monitor on Miron is expected to begin immediately,” Santelle said in a statement.

Santelle said a criminal investigation of Miron, led by the FBI, determined the company had obtained funds from school districts by intentionally inflating the wages Miron allegedly paid its workers.

Miron says at issue was language contained in industry-standard contracts for projects completed between 2003 and 2008.

Santelle said Miron recently paid the $4 million and officials are in the process of distributing the money to the five school districts.
