Bucks fire Larry Drew after reportedly landing Jason Kidd as head coach

The Milwaukee Bucks have fired Larry Drew as head coach following the reported trade of two future second-round draft picks in exchange for former Brooklyn Nets head coach Jason Kidd. The firing of Drew was announced by Bucks General Manager John Hammond Monday evening.

Hammond released this statement after relieving Drew of his coaching duties in Milwaukee: "Despite the challenging season, Larry has always handled himself and represented the Bucks in a first-class manner. Larry did the best he could in a difficult situation, especially given all of our injuries. I want to thank Larry for all of his efforts, and we wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors."

The negotiations between Brooklyn and Milwaukee had been taking place throughout the weekend, with the Bucks eventually agreeing to trade 2015 and 2019 second-round draft picks to the Nets for the rights of Kidd. The trade reportedly took place before the Bucks met with Larry Drew to notify him of his firing as head coach.

When the news of the trade talks surfaced, it appeared as though Kidd was also seeking an administrative role in the Milwaukee front office because the former player turned coach had asked Brooklyn for control of player personnel. ESPN.com is reporting that a source with knowledge of the situation says that Kidd is only being brought to Milwaukee to fulfill coaching duties, not an administrative role of running basketball operations.

After just one season leading the Bucks, Larry Drew will be replaced by Kidd. Drew coached Milwaukee to a NBA-worst 15-67 record. There were two years remaining on the contract Drew signed last offseason, a deal worth about $7.5 million for three years.
