Wood Co. deputy makes rescue in Wisconsin River

TOWN OF RUDOLPH (WAOW) -- A Wood County sheriff's deputy became a lifeguard this weekend and may have saved a life.

Deputy James Pidgeon rescued a woman who was in danger of drowning.

"It's a situation that I am really, really proud of," said Thomas Reichert, the Wood County sheriff.

Pidgeon was responding to a call about a woman in distress in the town of Rudolph.

"When he arrived at the scene, he observed that she was approximately 100 yards out in the river, on the Wisconsin River, near the Biron Dam."

Reichert calls what happened next an act of heroism.

"Deputy Pidgeon, quite bravely and fearlessly, immediately entered the water and swam out to her," he said.

Reichert says the 26-year-old woman was having trouble staying afloat.

"He was able to bring her back to shore where he had turned her over to EMS personnel and really was instrumental in probably saving her life," he said.

The sheriff says without any other resources, Pidgeon simply responded with his training.

"I wasn't surprised at all when I heard about what he had done," Reichert said.

Pidgeon, a veteran deputy and an ex-Marine, was unavailable for an interview. The sheriff says Pidgeon isn't seeking any attention for the rescue.

"We're planning on not forgetting about this and doing something special for him in terms of work recognition," said Reichert.

Authorities say the woman was taken to a hospital after being pulled from the water and is recovering.
