Neighbors react after human remains found in Oneida County

There are still many unanswered questions after Oneida County Sheriff's officials say human remains were found near Rhinelander.

Late Monday morning, officials say a person found human skeletal remains in the Town of Pelican.

They say the person found them in a wooded area near Lake Julia.

It's a discovery neighbors thought would never happen this close to home.

"It's creepy, it's very creepy," said Debbie Beck of the Town of Pelican. "We actually moved here because we wanted to feel safe. I love Lake Julia and I love Rhinelander and this is very unfortunate."

Newsline 9 reached out to Oneida County Sheriff Deputy Daniel Hess. Hess didn't talk to us on camera, but he did tell us that investigators say preliminary findings show the remains belong to adult male. Hess also said that there are no reported missing persons in the area.

Authorities say this doesn't appear to be a recent death.

The investigation is ongoing, but neighbors say they hope they get answers.

"I don't know where it is and I'd like to know where they found it," said Angie Hoppe of Town of Pelican.

Sheriff's officials say more information will be released once the autopsy is complete.
