BROKAW ( WAOW) – Authorities say a multiple-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 51 near Brokaw blocked the northbound lanes for nearly two hours Thursday on one of the busiest traveling days of the year.
At one point, traffic was backed up more than three miles. By 6:05 p.m., the Wisconsin State Patrol said traffic returned to normal.
Several emergency responders, including the Marathon County Sheriff's Department, were sent to scene.
It was not immediately known how many vehicles were involved and how serious anybody was hurt.
The crash happened about 4 p.m. on one of the busiest traveling days of the year as people celebrating the long Fourth of July weekend flowed into the Northwoods.
Some reports indicated traffic backed up in southbound lanes for a time as well.
The state Department of Transportation said a detour was set up right after the crash, sending northbound traffic westbound on County WW to County K, northbound on K to County Q and eastbound on Q back to US 51.
