STEVENS POINT (WAOW) – The Portage County Sheriff's Department says an 33-year-old inmate recently convicted of murder and facing life in prison hung himself in his jail cell and died.
Jailers discovered Jose Luis Flores Aca about 11:30 p.m. Sunday during safety and security checks and efforts to revive him were unsuccessful, Capt. Cory Nelson said in a statement Monday.
Ten days ago, Flores Aca pleaded guilty to first-degree intentional homicide and first-degree sexual assault in the Aug. 7 death of 36-year-old Jamie Koch at her apartment in Plover. He was to be sentenced Sept. 30.
The mandatory punishment for the murder conviction is life in prison and prosecutors said they would recommend that he never be eligible for parole.
According to Nelson, Flores Aca was found hanging from a bed sheet in an apparent suicide attempt. He had been checked about 30 minutes earlier "and there were no indications of any problems at that point in time," Nelson said in a statement.
Chief Deputy Dan Kontos said Flores Aca, who was in a cell by himself in a wing of the jail with five other inmates in separate cells, left behind a note. “I don't know what he said in the note,” Kontos said.
The Stevens Point Police Department was asked to investigate the death, which is standard in these cases, Nelson said.
Sean Drury, a public defender and Flores Aca's attorney for the homicide case, did not immediately return a telephone message Monday.
After being arrested in Koch's death, Flores Aca told investigators he was returning from an evening at the bar and had just been unable to talk to a former girlfriend when Koch asked "Hi, how are you?" as he stood in the hallway of the building where he and Koch had separate apartments, the criminal complaint said.
Flores Aca said Koch invited him inside her apartment and he eventually "threw her a punch" and she fell down, the complaint said.
Flores Aca said he used his hands and Koch's bra to strangle her and then sexually assaulted her, the complaint said.
Koch's body was found in a partially burned car near a farm field in rural Waupaca County, police said.
