Marshfield Clinic gives back $10 million to state

MARSHFIELD (WAOW)-- Marshfield Clinic, which received a $10 million grant in 2010, is giving the money back to the state because it is no longer needed.

"It was part of a larger plan to increase the training of dentists in rural and under-served areas of Wisconsin," Executive Director Brian Ewert said Thursday. "We saw that we could accomplish that without needing to utilize the taxpayers dollars."

The clinic was able to make the necessary changes in how to train dentists using other funds, he said.

In recent years, the clinic has added six dental centers, giving it nine facilities.

Those centers have specific areas for students to get some supervised training, much like a doctor gets in a hospital residency.

And instead of building a new structure for one training complex in Marshfield, the clinic has developed 24 different, much smaller training centers in local communities.

"The infrastructure is already there so we don't need to expend more resources," said Ewert.

Brian Ewert said the community has always been the heart of Marshfield Clinic.

"Six physicians started this clinic almost a hundred years ago to give better care and to be more efficient and we hold true to that to this day," said Ewert.

Marshfield Clinic operates about 50 medical centers located in central, northern and western Wisconsin.
