Hodag Country Fest kicks off in Rhinelander

RHINELANDER (WAOW) -- After months of preparation and excitement, the music has finally started at Hodag Country Festival in Rhinelander.

Campers and RV's have lined the grounds since the gates opened last Saturday.

Organizers say they expect 25,000 people to be in the crowd for Kenny Rogers' performance Thursday night.

They say the festival is a place where people can let loose from their everyday lives and turn into their fun alter egos.

"To hear where people come from is really fun," said Eve Van Harpen, one of the festival's organizers. "We have a lot of Yoopers so a lot of the Yoopers and Wisconsinites get together. I just love to see what people wear. There's a guy who always wears cases of beers. His whole swimsuit is made out of a beer case."

Someone from Italy checked into the concert Thursday. Organizers say it's the first time the festival has gone international.
