Changes coming to Wisconsin National Guard

The Wisconsin Department of Military Affairs says the Wisconsin Army National Guard is reorganizing some units and armories.

The changes will impact several communities in central Wisconsin.

The armory in Merrill will be impacted. It's losing its unit.

The armory in Baraboo will also lose its unit.

State military officials say both armories will remain open for National Guard soldiers who participate in the Recruit Sustainment Program.

According to the press release, there will be additional changes in central Wisconsin.

Battalions in Wisconsin Rapids and Mosinee will be consolidated. A unit in Antigo will move to Camp Douglas in Juneau County. A unit in Tomahawk will be reorganized.

According to the press release, each location was strategically chosen so they won't affect the Wisconsin National Guard's readiness to help when needed.

Leaders say the moves will help improve command and control of units, making them more efficient and accountable.

Newsline 9 reached out to National Guard Leaders to ask how many National Guard members will be affected. They did not immediately return requests for comment.

Leaders say the changes will be complete by the end of 2015.

here for a look at which units will be affected.
